Q. Where can readers buy it? Books are available at Barnes & Noble and Borders book stores and also through www.amazon.com and www.ingrambook.com.

Q. How did you go about getting the book published? I contacted the publisher through an author friend of mine who had two books published by Publish America. I kept trying many different publishers until Publish America came through.

Is PA getting books onto shelves at B&N?

I had Exile available at B&N, but it was because I went in and pleaded my case. Nothing PA has done besided publish a poorly editted book has resulted in my book being on any shelf but theirs.

Mine was on the shelves of a pair of Barnes and Nobles, a pair of Borders, a Waldenbooks, a B. Dalton, and a local independent bookstore. PA had nothing to do with getting them into any of those stores...and in fact, was more a hindrance then anything (according to conversations with the managers).

Of those stores who "took a chance" on PA books, the Waldenbooks and B. Dalton went out of business, one of the B&N stores sold out all four books they ordered for a signing, the other B&N looked to have shipped the remaining copies off to a warehouse somewhere, one of the Borders stores sold all the excess copies back to me, and the manager of the other Borders store is out of a job...

I had my books on the shelves of 6 different Borders, and they did the ordering for the signings that I had for them, although PA didn't and wouldn't get the books to the stores on the last two orders, even though I gave them plenty of time to get the orders printed and sent, and I had to get the orders filled online through B&N and Amazon and I got the books shipped to me from those places, not through the order that was placed for the signings at those two stores. PA couldn't/wouldn't act in a timely manner to get the books shipped to the stores, so I had to get them from elsewhere......

However, they may have been getting their act together in recent times (at least I certainly hope soooo), all of my dealings with them took place in the year 2002. Gosh, that was a long time agoooooooo.

Please, Claudia, quit trying to give Wilhem the benefit of the doubt. He's the consummate finagler. My second book, Bushwhacked, is still being published by Publish America, so I ought to know.

As I recall, Vice-President Spiro Agnew had to resign after it became common knowledge that he had taken a $5,000 bribe from a contractor while he was Governor of Maryland. Would anyone care to venture a guess as to why the Attorney General of Maryland doesn't want to prosecute Wilhem Meiners for fraud despite the hundreds of complaints that have been filed against Publish America?

This is the same verbiage they have always used. Technically, PA books ARE available at any brick and mortar bookstore, because they can order them through Ingram. But they are only 'available' to the bookstore and would not be on the actual shelves unless someone convinced them to do so - which ain't easy (and not many bookstores are going to stock a non-returnable book - not unless you scratch their back by bringing in dozens of book-buyers for a signing or something.) Major chains' buyers are often not able to choose what books they stock, either. That is often controlled up the corporate chain.

The best-bet for getting a PA book (or any self-published book) actually stocked on a bookstore shelf is to plead with independent bookstores, OR consign them.
