Dena Fischer of Manus & Associates? She is a Lit. Agent and is on the board of this wokshop that I was thinking about going to. I have a chance to get a one-on-one time with her during a Writers Workshop in April. Do any of you know anything about her and do you think it would be worth the time and dollars ($108..total) to go to the workshop all day and the cost for it is $79.00 and the one-on-one time is $29.00, but I get to pick who I want to see, and have 15 minutes with her regarding my rewrite of Notes??? She does have a positive record of selling books to majors, with upfront advances paid to authors.

At our annual Western Writers of America Convention, there are always agents and publishers who will meet with any of the authors that want to pitch their work. I guess a few members have been signed over the years; but if not, it's still a way to make contacts. My other view is: having agents and publishers at these writers workshops, may just be a come on to get paid registrations.

The "expert" advise is "attend the workshops and plunk down the $$$ for the face to face". I get this from every agent and publisher site I visit. It's a way for the the people attending the meetings to make some money and to get to know the authors.
The face to face may not produce a contract but it will create a relationship. Networking is how many unknowns get to be known. So, you have to start someplace. Take your best work and have at least two other ideas (those 40 word hooks). Maybe the person will bite on one of the three.

I think it's probably worth the money, Claudia. I know several authors who have gotten signed to agents or publishers that way, or at least got a request to read their books.
You are passionate about the message and reason in your book, so you will do well. You'll be able to spark some interest, I'm sure.
Personally, I couldn't do it, because I get tongue tied too easily.

It is a gamble that I would not take, but then I usually don't come across well in person. What bothers me is the paying of fees without substantive guarantees, which, in my experience, is how authors frequently get fleeced.

This is what it says about her on the Santa Barbara Agents & Editors Day site:
"Dena Fischer, an agent with Manus & Associates Literary Agency, Inc., represents literary fiction, practical and narrative nonfiction and memoir. With a knack for understanding an author’s goals and helping achieve them through respectful constructive feedback, she has been helping writers streamline and perfect their work for more than a decade. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in English literature, Dena began her career in the film business in Los Angeles as a book reader at Creative Artists Agency. She went on to run the agency’s story department, reading and critiquing scripts and books for the president of the agency and supervising a department of staff and freelance readers. She then served as vice president at two independently financed production companies. Making the switch from film to books, she was an associate at The Amy Rennert Agency, Inc. for three years prior to joining Manus & Associates.
$109 in not a lot of money as far as conferences go, so I'd say it's worth a shot to get a face-to-face meeting with her.
