It is a sign of hard times that Publish America now equates the Canadian dollar with the U.S. dollar. That's right, books now cost the same amount in Canada as they cost in the United States. That means that our dollar has declined by 60 percent in value during the last six years. That's what happens when you use a credit card to finance a war.

I live within spitting distance of Canada and was over there a couple of weeks ago. I bought some gas (at close to $5.00 a gallon) and went to dinner using my debit card for both transactions. The exchange rate was $0.9912US for $1.00 Canadian. My bank charged a 1% surcharge for foreign transactions.

I got a $50.00 Canadian check (honorarium)for participating in a writer's conference and when I cashed it at a bank in the US, I got $42.50.

The exchange rate may be hurting somebody but it sure ain't the banks.
