Last night I finished uploading Lavender and Old Lace by Myrtle Reed - not to be confused with Arsenic and Old Lace - to my website, http://www.fdungan.com/lace.htm. I had a hard time with the cover and the music because it was written to appeal to females during the Edwardian era. I tried to get it right, but being a male I have no way of knowing.

I read Arsenic and Old Lace when I was a young girl devouring period pieces like this. I liked Reed's writing style. Those were gentler times and I found, and still find, such books comforting no matter what their genre. Good one Fred. I thought the music and cover art were ideal.

Fred, I looked your site over real close.
You perform a valuable service.
It's a shame people don't embrace the classics like they should.
Young people today seem to read only tech manuals, and nothing for fun.
Their fun is my Space, U Tube, their text messaging, movies and clubs.

My 19-year-old daughter and I attend a Classics Revisited book discussion group at our library every month. In the past six months, we've read LOLITA, DR. ZHIVAGO, BRAVE NEW WORLD, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, and GREAT EXPECTATIONS.

I don't know why I haven't thought to do it before now, but I will give everyone in the group the URL for Fred's site the next time we meet.

Fred has some WONDERFUL classics on his website. Some of the lesser known ones are actually better than the internationally famous classics. The Gene Stratton Porter books tell uplifting stories about exceptional characters, PLUS show what this country was like in the age before technology, strip malls, and high rises replaced natural wonders. Porter was a woman who masqueraded as a male because publishers would not accept submissions from females in the early 20th century.

I confess that I am overwhelmed with joy at the thought of the ladies of the Forum coming to my rescue. It doesn't get any better than this. Extreme ego gratification!

yep, we have your back, Fred. Never doubt it. Anyone who views even a small portion of your website can see what an exceptional person you are. Your website is a testament to wordsmiths of every era and a true labor of love.
My admiration for you as a person and a writer is boundless and I bet Joyce will concur. (Read Bushwhacked if you don't understand that statement.) You are an unsung hero of the highest order in my opinion.

Now, let some troll come in and jump on THAT if they dare.

Fred,

Wow, your son is so impressive. And handsome. You must be very proud.

And I love the selection of classics. One thing no one here probably knows about me: I am bonkers for Charles Dickens! When I was a teenager, I read everything he ever wrote. He brought his characters to life in a way few authors ever have. What a talent.

Great site!

I have a Dickens question for you, Nancy, but I don't want to hijack Fred's thread, so I'll post it in a new one.

Yes, as I've said before, Fred is my favorite disgruntled everything! I absolutely loved THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO CONDO DON and tell everyone I know about it.
