Jennifer Lynn,
A little late on your post.
Microsoft has a free (FREE??!!!) GIF animator on their web site. It's a downloaded tool for windows. (I use WIN98 and WIN95 so I'm unsure about newer versions. I don't upgrade from what works unless I HAVE to.)

You get what you pay for though, so there's not much documentation. I hacked at it and it's pretty simple to use. You just open your GIFs into the software and can then reorder them or view run them as an animation. You can also control delay between shots and save the animation as a gif.

Lots of visual software will convert other formats to gif. I use Graphic Workshop. I think the new MS Paint gives GIF as a save option. But Paintshop or something similar will probably do it. Maybe even MS Image. So you can create your raw images with whatever tool you're comfortable using then save them as GIF. Then just use MS GIF Animator to animate it into a whole.

I've also used a thing call SnagIt at work that's similar but once I got comfortable with MS's tool, I just use that. Hell, it's simple...and free.

Hope that helps.
Later,
Olen A.

Actually Olen, I just found a progam called 'Just Banners' and its really simply to use and works well. Yes I paid for a registered version but I did try it first in the free trial.
My problem is I'm just no good with graphics or the tools to create them, so I needed something that even an idiot could figure out. This was super easy and I got a free program from the company as part of their january promotion. In a matter of minutes, I've already put a four frame animated banner together. It looks great and I'm surprised as hell that I did it!

I will check out the microsoft thingy you mentioned tho.. I wasn't fond of the program Tony suggested. It was simply too complicated for me, and it assumes you know how to build a frame and all that stuff. Did I mention I'm a 'duh' in that department???

You are allowed to be DUH!!?
The SOFTWARE is supposed to be smart and simple. (Not meaning the you're NOT smart. I must remember to remain PC at all times.)
Some programmers forget that. If it isn't smart and simple, nuke it.
(that's a techie term) I'm just a great believed in free. If I have to do a learning curve-thing, I have no problem with it. But I'm in the business. Those who aren't, shouldn't have to do techie stuff. Would serve Bill Gates right.

Not surprising.
Micro-swift's web site isn't exactly user-friendly if you aren't a techie by nature.
Hell, I'm a professional and I have trouble finding things on their site.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Glad you found something that works.
That's really all that matters anyway.
I always find what's easy for me and use that. (That's why I still use WIN95 and WIN98, and behold-the current viruses pass me by) I don't care if stuff has bells and whistles that I won't use. In my peer group I'm known as the King of Obsolete Stuff, hardware and software, because I use it if it works. To hell with the lastest and greatest. If I NEED something, I'll upgrade. Not until then.

Good Luck to you,
Olen A.

I checked MS and confirmed your results.
Well, it WAS there. I swaya-ta-GAD it was there. It's on my machine at home.

I'm at work now. Tomorrow I'll search the site for the name of my original executable file and see if maybe Cousin Bill Gates nuked it. It IS a little old.

I'll either find it on their site for anyone who may want to play with it...or...the copy I have could mysteriously appear as an e-mail attachment to anyone who wants to play with it. They did give it out free afterall.

I, of course, would NEVER do such a thing without express permission. But such things mysteriously happen, if someone wants it. And no fingerprints will be left behind.

Sorry for sending you chasing wild geese.

Todd,
I'm up and alert now. I work 40 hrs between Fri morning and Sunday night. A bit intense but useful. I'll try to find the file and hook you up.
Computers !! Hey, I WORK on the damned things and I have NO respect for computers.
Actually it's more regarding Windows. A sloppy product. But what little I know of Linux makes it look like a lot of trouble to work with. I've already got that with Windows and I KNOW what I'm doing. So why change now?

The lack of available products to run on Linux makes me nervous...being an armchair programmer myself, I think it might be fun to play with...but I wouldn't want to run all my regular stuff there...

At the moment (when I should be writing), I'm messing with the ultra-archaic (to everyone but me) Visual C++...one of these days, I'll have a real program...and probably have more financial success from it than my first published book...haha...

Fascinating that indie bookstores dealing via INGRAMS are more apt to stock a book than a major chain...

Major chains have their hands tied by corporate policy. The indies can order whatever they want.

Yes, despite what some publishers may tell their authors, corporate policies have a lot to do with major chains and the lack of stocking. There are some managers who are willing to bend over backwards for new or local authors, but those are generally the exception, and not the rule.

I get paid this week, so will be heading to Borders to see how easy it is to get hold of your book, Steve...

Thought I would bump this one up to the top again as there are a few ideas about promotion in thsi thread. New folks welcome to read back through.

I've had quite a few Walden's and B Dalton's in Central IL pick up BULLETPROOF SOUL. The only hold up I have is availability via Ingrams at times...

How do you "make" a best seller? By getting your titles into these stores. This list is surprisingly small.

Independents:

Books & Company, Dayton, Ohio
Davis Kidd Booksellers, three stores in Tennessee
Hawley-Cooke Booksellers, Louisville, Kentucky
Ruminator Bookstore, Saint Paul, Minnesota
Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Lexington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio
Powell's Books, Portland, Oregon
Tattered Cover Book Store, Denver, Colorado
Ingram Book Company

Chain:

Amazon.com
Barnes & Noble
B. Dalton Bookseller
Bookstop and Bookstar
Books-A-Million and Bookland
Borders Books and Music
Brentano's
Crown Books
Doubleday Book Shops
Little Professor Bookstores (a selection)
Wal-Mart
Waldenbooks

Obviously without distribution you cannot get into all these stores, but if you live near one you might be able to talk your way in, if only for a short time. Then spread out from there...

Never underestimate the value of promotional items...
Also, never underestimate what you can afford...

Went to Kinko's today, since I needed to get together some material for a signing next month (and needed to send some up to the store in advance)...

Picked up three 'mini-posters' (of cardstock), 100 mailing flyers (even pre-folded), and 240 bookmarks (also cardstock...I did have to trim them myself, can't recall how much it costs for them to do it), and spent less than $40...if I'd known this before, I definitely would have used them for earlier signings...whew!!!

But that's what second books are for, I guess... :-)

good stuff Todd.

Another item a pal of mine reminded me of recently is a FLASH COMMERCIAL for a book. Sort of a link to click on and see a brief teaser for a novel that is released.

Any port in a storm, I wager...

Another cool promo item that has came to my attention is this.

Michael McBride's SPECIES is being released from BDB soon...and to SHOCKLINES customers only they offered a free chapbook of poems or some such thing with each autographed copy ordered. Just a little thing. Now, SPECIES has been on the top ten pre-order list at SHOCKLINES for weeks...something I only pulled off a couple times.

BTW, SHOCKLINES is full of great horror writers and fantasy readers who buy lots of small press material and talk shop. Matt Seiber is a swell guy and would probably be willing to work with any smalelr press org to get linked and listed on their boards etc (HINT HINT to any such folks who read this post.)

http://store.yahoo.net/shocklines/index.html

This also is similiar to my idea of offering a easily bound original short story at a book signing in a folder...folks luv free stuff. They will tell friends. Hopefully.

Free stuff gets their attention, definitely...

Depending on whether I have any copies of Hero left when I eventually get the sequel out, I was contemplating giving away free copies to anyone who ordered a signed copy of the sequel...

We'll have to see how that goes...

If I ever do press kits, I got an amazing prototype in the mail last week. If I did press kits, this is what I would want mine to look like.

It was for a first book, from a person who is not rich or famous. But much attention was paid to detail.

The file folder was glossy black. In the middle of the front cover was pasted either a print or a post card of the book cover, which contrasted with the glossy black background to gorgeous effect.

Inside was author info, printed out on good paper with a muted letterhead, various reviews and interesting tidbits, and a copy of the book.

It made me wish I'd done that with either of my books.

Hey all,
As my day job is at a network affiliate, I'm familiar with the way things work in TV land, (or as I like to call it, the "sitcom factory"), I thought I might impart some words of wisdom(?) when it comes to promoting your book through local news.

First of all, you've got to know the station. You need to know which newscast lends you an opportunity to promote your book. In most markets, it's either going to be the local morning show, or a "nooner", that is, a noon-time newscast. Pick the newscast that frequently--as in every day--has in-studio guests "promoting" what they have to offer.

Second, know who to get in touch with. Odds are, the ASSISTANT producer for the newscast you're targeting is going to be the one that schedules the guests. If you live in a smaller city, (think less than 100,000 people), it may be the producer him/herself that does the scheduling. Pervasive knowledge suggests that Producers and AP's are not interested in hearing directly from the public at large. Not true. When you call the station to talk to a Producer or AP, DO NOT call while the newscast you are targeting is on the air. DO NOT call within an hour before OR after the newscast airs. Morning show producers and AP's generally get to the station around midnight, and work until eight or nine in the morning. Helpful hint: Call a morning show producer around two in the morning. This gives them time to see what's what when they get to work, but it's not too late that they're already in the midst of writing a show. Call a "nooner" producer/AP around 10 am. Again, you're calling early, but not TOO early. Most local producers/AP's are STRAINING to find guests to fill their timeslots. But be smart about it. Be polite. Link your book to an event, (booksigning), and of course it helps if you're a local. If you write horror, target the station around Halloween. If you write romance, Valentine's Day, etc.

Third: Most local newscasts, (especially the ones that have guests on a routine basis), LOVE to give crap away. For example: "The fifteenth caller gets two tickets to the Monster Truck Show this Saturday...". If you for some reason can't get on a show as a guest, (or even if you can), offer the producer/AP four or five FREE copies of your book to give away on the show throughout the week. Here's why: When they put up all the information on what number to call on the screen, (what's called a fullscreen), they'll also put up your name, the name of your book, and probably a picture of the cover. Free advertising. The director of the newscast will want to make sure that everyone knows what number to call, so they'll leave the fullscreen up for :15 to :20. That's a :15 to :20 commercial that you get for the price of a book.

Hope this helps!

We have a show here called "Nevada Newsmakers" that is on at 12:30 Mon thru Thurs right after the noon news. A few months ago, a group that I am active with was having a Bill that is being looked at in the Interim Committee of our Legislature being discussed and voiced opinions on before that committee and up for a vote as to whether or not it would make it to the floor. The Committee it is in front of is the Childrens, Youth & Families committee. I was a guest on that show talking about the Bill, but the Bill in question is whether or not the State of Nevada should Open Sealed Adoption Records for all Adoptees. They let me plug my book, and showed the cover of it, during the last few oh, probably half minute of the show. My book is about the ramifications of Adoption. Perfect example of an event that is in the news that got my book a plug on the show. My other Coalition Partner who is more pro-active than I am had the floor to do the actual talking about the Bill for the better part of our 5 minute session, but I did get my book plug in and she talked about the Bill.

The Bill is coming up again for another discussion and vote after the committee makes its recommendations, and I am trying to get another session on that show.

As per what S.F. had to say, yes the best time is in the mornings about 10am or so, as that was when I got hold of the lady that produces the show. There are also in some locations, shows about local interest things on the PBS Station in your area, or on the local shows on the weekends during the days like Sundays where we have a show "Nevada Matters" and another called "Laws, Guns & Money," (or some such title, not really sure how it is worded) put on by a group of Attorneys and guesting law makers and other sorts of state or county officials, and a few other things that might fit into your genre. And then there is "Book Talk," in our state on PBS, a local show about books, where the panel sits and yanks apart a book and talks about its good and bad points, and value to society, but usually they choose older more stable, well known books, and I frankly haven't had the courage to submit mine yet. Mostly because the guy that hosts it is really brutal and I know several of the other panel from my writers group, and well, and, it takes courage to sit there and watch as they rip your heart out. The other show that one could get onto, if you have a book on cooking or shopping, is the local lunch segment of the news that features a cooking spot or menu spot. Or we have a news spot in the Thurs news shows called Hidden HotSpots about good places to eat that are hidden, if your book has anything to do with that type of thing.

This thread is getting old again, so I thought I'd bring it back to the top with what I'm doing today.
Since I finished my newest novella for Echelon last night, I thought I'd take a day to work on some promo stuff. I've let things slack for a while and its time to get back at it.
Today, I bought some Twinnings tea... earl grey in the little individual envelopes. I've printed labels, one side with the covers of my books, and the other side says, "Enjoy a cup of tea and a good book with Jennifer Lynn" and then website info.
After I made the couple dozen that will deplete the labels I have, I plan to start on something similar with bath salts. The slogan there will be "Take a bubble bath with Jennifer Lynn"

That's my contribution to this thread for now...lol

Hey Jenn - Those were great ideas. hmmmmmm. Now what will you do with them? Give them out to people as advertisement or what?

If I could find rosescented bath salts, Icould do the same thing for The Alley of Wishes. Of course.....now all I would have to do is figure outh how to put my book cover on the front of the salts. hmmmmmm.....

There have been some really good ideas on this promo thread if I had the ability to pursue them.

I plan to send a bunch out to a couple of romance sites that do goodie bags for readers, as well as to have a bunch on tables when I do booksignings. I'm going to be taking part in a couple of big 'craft sale' type events this fall, so something as a freebie on the table is always an attention getter.

Laurel, for the bathsalts, I bought some teensy ziploc bags from Michael's (each bag holds about 3 tsps of bathsalts) and then stuck the label on the front. It was easy.

Ok, take a bubble bath with Jennifer made me look twice LOL

A horror writer pal of mine said hw saw an article where a writer in the UK had a gal pal with great endowment stand by his book table and hold books during a signing. Apparently, he sold alot more books to guys that day.

I joked about this and got 2 volunteers at work...

I had 5000 pencils made up with my title, ISBN, and website address. Always had a pile of them on ther goody tables at conferences, handed them out at signings, left them on the counter in libraries and bookstores, and put a few in a little cardboard holder at the supermatket bulletin board. Can't help thinking of how helpful it might have been to have my book available at some of those places too.

LOL That was the whole idea Steven! It makes you look at my name and book covers not once, but twice!

I tried the pencil thing. Still got a bunch from Hoodwinked, which I give away every now and then, but I'm looking for original, cost effective ideas right now.

Anyone else doing something at the moment?

A friend made up some candy wrappers for Kit-Kat bars but the trouble with that is people eat the candy and throw the wrapper in the trash.

I've seen keychains and letter openers that people are more likely to hang on to but they're expensive.

I had a bunch of bookmarks made and they didn't generate much interest until I autographed them. It made a noticable difference in how quickly they were snatched up. Musta been the "personal" effect.

Don Bruns and Joe Konrath have their books named after drinks and so they give out bar coasters.

And I've been a busy little writer today too. Booked an author day at Ebooklove (a yahoo group) for July 25, so basically I'll be back and forth to the computer all day --- like that's a stretch for me! And I've booked a chat at Romance Junkies for August 9.

Don't worry, I'll remind you again

Autographed bookmarks, not a bad idea.

Bar coasters? Sheesh, what do I give out with GODFORSAKEN? Bible tracts?
(Note, GODFORSAKEN is not a religious fiction title, but contains alot of pagan gods, Christian martyrs and tons of violence).

My autographed bookmarks go like hotcakes. A fellow writer made me master copies and I had bookmarks made at a store that specializes in such things. Trouble is, the cover of the first edition of The Alley of Wishes is on them.

My signed bookmarks go like hot cakes. I signed both sides - The Alley of Wishes on one side and The Grass Dance on the other.

My problem with bookmarks or bath salts or any other thing is that I am a dullard when it comes to graphics. Have not the first clue how to do anything.

What about publicists? Or should we start a whole new thread to collect our thoughts on this subject.

My first comment is that anything that requires a cash investment is a 100% waste of money if your publisher thwarts every attempt you make to sell your books.

My personal experience with any and all of these "methods" of promotion was that my budget was feeble so my results could be nothing but feeble.
I don't care how much "rah-rah" people spew about getting your name out etc.,
it is simply whistling past the cemetery.
To properly promote anything in modern-day USA takes money, lots of it.
If one seeks fame, keep after it.
If it is fortune you want, rather than spend a measly $200 on promotion, buy
200 lottery tickets. Better odds!
If you just write because you must, forget all that other crap.

One way to sell more books is to have your contract terminated.

Little vials of blood, Steve?
(which you can probably pick up cheap from a local butcher...the blood, not the vials)

Probably depends on what kinds of readers you're looking to bring in...

Well, if you were in a spot for Goths...syrup and food coloring...but I doubt I would do such a thing :-)
I like the endowed book holder one, myself...however, I fear my wife will frown on such a venture...to tell a family secret, she is qualified, but far too conservative to do such a thing. Makes one wonder what she is doing with me...
ANYWAY

Dennis, a publisher that backs you up is a great thing. I was told not to do a signing by a previous publisher because they do not "prefer" such things...yet they totally supported another of their authors in such a deal. When I pressed, I think they didn't want "too many" of their authors doing signings at once.
Huh???

But, I really think staying on PROMO topic is good. The ideas are always great.
