Okay, let 'em stay. Dinner out sounds great, since I have a hair-line fracture in my left forearm from the car accident I had Monday. It had been so long since it rained here that we forgot how to drive on wet roads, and my car decided to skid instead of stop when I applied the brakes. Those airbags are hot when they deploy!

Don't make fun of me, Kev. I'm injured.

Joyce, Molly told me about your accident! I hope you're doing okay. I can't imagine anything more frightening that to know my car isn't going to stop. Take good care. Hey, curl up and read a good book. Mine, for instance. LOL

Thanks, Lynn. It's my left arm, so I'm still functional. I was very lucky and will definitely slow down on wet roads from now on. I was only going the speed limit, but a couple of mph less and I might have been able to stop. Duly noted in my mental RAM.

Don't forget the mascara application! And, just to show I'm cleaning up my act, I won't even mention tampons...

You're banned, Sheila. If you had only promoted your book and quit your darn whining, you would have been okay. But nooooo, you had to mention mascara application and tampons...so, out you go.

Don't even try to figure out the reasoning...just go.

P.S. What the heck happened to the thread Laurel started for me? I said no personal crap on here, just book crap. Now, give me my thread back.

Just kidding...Glad you weren't hurt too badly, Joyce.

We're a family here. I know other boards claim that, but here, it's true.

We'll talk about personal stuff until C.E. stops us. But, you know what? He wouldn't do it.

I care about the people here, and I want to know when they're hurting or discouraged. And, I want to know when something good happens. Sure, we're writers, but we're also human beings. Hard to separate our humanity from our passion.

However, I heard that Joyce was busily gawking at some beefcake who was changing a tire on the side of the road...

Bill, we've already had that discussion.

Sheila, check out the minuscule peepers on my smiling face. Mascara application for me requires a microscope. The tampons we'll leave unmentioned like you said.

Lynn, you are way off base. The beefcake was the driver in the car I hit.

Am I the only one who finds Joyce's blue text all-but unreadable? I have to give up after a couple of sentences but try to grasp the gist of them from other's responses.

If it IS just me I guess I'll cave and get a new prescription for my glasses.

Actually, Frank, and Joyce (since this is about your and your posts).......

I have a very hard time reading the posts from Joyce, cause although Blue is a good color, it doesn't come through too well on the backgrounds that CE has chosen to use for the boards. I am sorry Joyce, IF this offends you in any way, but I really have a hard time also, in the reading of your posts. I was all for trying to accomodate you and the penchant for blue, but it is sort of nervewracking and eye obliterating. And I only wear reading glasses. Blue is an OK color, for making a point or saying just one little thing in that color for emphasis, but it really doesn't read well in long posts.

Just my two cents worth.

I can barely read anybody's posts, regardless of color. But I have discovered that highlighting the posts - blue or otherwise - enhances the readability for me.

Hehehe - I've been thinking that for a while now.

I can't say that I put all THAT much thought into the color scheme (and I'm obviously no interior decorator), but the dark colors with green text seems easiest for me to read on the ol 'puter screen.

I'd be happy to investigate other default options, but I'm afraid that it's very difficult to tell what colors are good until you put them together... SOmething that seems like it should be just dandy often really hurts the eyes...

Joyce... I find that white looks pretty good on both the red and black backgrounds...

CEW

PS - If you really like the Blue... maybe a different font would help? Or maybe a larger text..?

Well, gee. A simple "heads up" was all that was needed. Somebody should have spoken up sooner. I don't have any trouble seeing the blue font, so I had no idea it was a problem for some.

I usually didn't have a problem unless I'd just come in from outside, and my eyes hadn't adjusted to the light difference...except for the post where Joyce gave the blurb for her book...in that other blue font...that was just freaky, especially against the red background...I look at it, and it's almost like the characters are dancing around on the page, and I can't get them to focus...

Of course, I already have a copy of TBF...

Ok, Joyce,
we're sorry that we didn't say something earlier. We were just all thinking that you really like the color blue and all and didn't want to hurt your feelings........ We mostly try to just sort of accept whatever everyone chooses to do, and let it go at that, but sometimes, actually reading one's posts is much better than just sort of skimming them and maybe missing something that is important. And reading in green or yellow or even white is much easier for us (um)oldies, who have a longer distance to go to read the baords.

No prob, Claudia. I just hated to hear I'd been wracking nerves and getting ignored over something I had no clue was even a problem. For future reference, I don't get offended over reasonable requests. I'm not a diva and have no intention or desire ever to be one. I like blue, obviously, but had I known it was hard to read for some, I would have changed immediately.

And the "old folks" reference was for Bill.

Well, for those taking bets on Joyce's next screw up.......I have a really big one.

I wasn't going to say anything until I read the "sympathy for the old folks and
squinty-eyed writers" remark.

This week I changed providers, I e mailed my friend at the library to let her know my new address, I added...."I'll see you tomorrow at Joyce's book signing."

I received an e mail back immediately. "The book signing is RIGHT NOW. Where is she?" The place was packed and the star failed to appear.

I talked to Joyce immediately and guess what.............she had the wrong day written down. Glad to see that she is posting. My last word from her was "I am going to kill myself."

BTW Lynn, I don't play slots. I play poker and with my own money. Joyce did play slots and got money from one of the guys at the poker table.

"The book signing is RIGHT NOW. Where is she?"

LOLOL! That takes the cake over my going to a fancy schmancy luncheon in honor of my book with only one eye made up. Between phone calls and Fred interrupting me, I somehow forgot to put mascara and eyeliner on my left eye. I got a couple of strange looks and chalked it up to the fact that the ladies were jealous of my impending success (gagging may commence here).

It wasn't until I got home and my daughter commented on the fact that I looked really strange with only one eye made up. GOD!! What a putz.

Move over Joyce, I did the same thing two weeks ago. For months I had written in my Daytimer the date and time for my appearance at the Country Club in Valdosta (45 miles south of me). The defense attorney in my book was giving a book review on my book - and I was invited to speak after the review.

I appeared at the appointed time and place. No one was there so I went to the attorney's office only to be told that the event had taken place the day before! Everyone was quite disappointed I was a no-show.

And so it goes. I felt like the Village Idiot one more time.

This month (MAY 16th) I am supposed to be the featured speaker for our local library's fundraising event. I will double check that date!

Lynn, you are so damn funny. I can just see you doing that.

Back to the original subject of the thread . . . here is my review of the last book I read, May's Rainbow by ME Taylor:

ME Taylor accomplished something with May's Rainbow that I thought no one would ever do: she made me empathize with an abuser. Although I've never been in an abusive relationship myself, I have always had such contempt for abusers that I couldn't even bring myself to let my female characters tolerate them in my own writing. But after reading May's Rainbow, I can understand why sometimes it's hard to walk away from someone who beats you.

May and Lee meet and fall in love as teenagers, and at first everything is wonderful. They are inseparable and totally committed to each other. The first time Lee loses his temper with May and twists her arm, he pleads with her to take him back and swears he will never hurt her again. The next time he slaps her and punches her on the side of the head. Each time his violence escalates, so does the desolation and appearance of sincerity in his apologies afterward. He begs and cries and tells her how much he loves her, and although every time he hurts her I was outraged and swore I wanted her to get rid of him, I found myself wanting to believe him right along with May when he would promise it would never happen again. And just like May, I hoped marriage and fatherhood would change him and was happy when they got married, but of course he didn't change.

This story touched me on many levels because I felt for so many of the characters. May is an admirable heroine who knows she doesn't deserve to be abused and that it's not her fault, she just can't walk away from the man she loves. And Lee is not the stereotypical batterer. When he isn't angry, he's a loving husband and father who seems to honestly try to do what's right by his family, but because of whatever inner demons he suffers from, he just can't handle responsibility for long and continues to screw up until he forces May to find the strength she needs to leave for good.

When I read the last page of May's Rainbow, I was crying for several reasons: out of despair for Lee and his self-destructive fate, out of regret for their shattered family and their son who would probably never know his father, and with pride for May because she had regained her dignity and self-esteem and was able to save herself and the son she loves more than anything else.

North of Texas follows ten generations of the North family and chronicles the lives of five of these spirited men in particular: John, Abijah, Tom, Harvey, and Ed. Tom Elkins' journalistic background is evident in his attention to facts, but he utilizes his talent for story-weaving to provide fictional details that make for a tale that's as entertaining as it is informative and historically accurate. Readers fight alongside North men in the Revolutionary, Civil, and Vietnam wars. Their adventures are engrossing and make you feel as if you're watching the events play out before your eyes. Even for a history non-enthusiast like me, this gripping book was hard to put down.

The author also reveals his journalistic roots by his refusal to slant his portrayal of any of the characters. He reports their flaws and mistakes right along with their accolades, leaving his readers well-equipped to form their own opinions about these sometimes too-human men, and his honesty lends credibility and pays tribute to the North family's many honors.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written docudrama and eagerly look forward to reading more by Tom Elkins.
