I'll chime in on Mark Dirschel and Simplicity. The writing was top notch and the emotions profound. Stephen King on his best day could not plumb the insights packed into Simplicity. It was an amazing read. good review, Joyce. You hit all the nails on the head. Simplicity was far more than a horror novel about vampires.

Which takes me back to a subject near and dear to my heart. PublishAmerica has some top notch writers under contract, and some top notch writers no longer under contract. I know several who have published more than one book with PA and are darn proud of it.

Finally, if I remember correctly, Herschel started the cussing and name calling so it's too late now to for him to call foul.

Herschel,

I truly resent what you just said about me and the posts that I made to you on this topic.

Here is what I stated that you seemingly think is FOUL. "YOU were the one that brought up PA, this was a decent conversation about agents, publishing, and questions regarding those two entities until you stuck your itty-bitty gnats ass opinions in here trying to stir everyone up. Go play somewhere else, unless you can add something good to the conversation. You weren't being helpful, you were being demeaning and snobbish in your approach to this board and the people who post here. Claudia"

Now, Herschel, could you please tell me where I offended you or called you anything? I simply stated the truth. I wasn't calling any names, like you did, immediately after my first post to you. FROM YOU, on the above thread, "I can and will if necessary get just as foul as Claudia. They shouldn't worry though, CEW will banned me as soon as he has the time. He bans everybody who's critical of this forum and its relentless attacks on PA."

You also stated on that answer shortly after my post of the above: to calling me a loser and whiner and that I was still crying about PA F**king up my book. I didn't say anything like that to you, in fact I stated that most of my books problems were mine or my agents for submitting the book to PA and my taking the contract they offered. That is not crying, rather it is accepting my own part in what has happened to my book, but you don't seem to get that, do you?

Like I sad in my earlier post, HERSCHEL, GET A LIFE and go pester someone else who might appreciate what you are saying. It is not wanted here, nor appreciated. For crying out loud, Hersch, all I said was that your opinions in this particular thread and idea were worth nothing more than a gnats ass fluttering around an eyebrow hair..... Get some humor and get a life. I sincerely don't think anything I said can be construed as FOUL.

You do realize that by replying to this individual's posts with anger is exactly what gives him reason to live. He will continue to take potshots at people in order to elicit a response. I understand the desire to clarify how wrong his statements are. But, this isn't the point. This person has no other life other than to see how riled up he can make everyone on this board. This is narcissism at its zenith.

There is no desire on this person's part to learn, share or be a part of a coherent conversation. He is only here to spread the negative energy that pervades his sad little life and to suck the air out of a happy group so that we will concentrate on him. The sad part is, it's working.

This person will never get a life because it would require some serious therapy and anger management. Allow him to be miserable, sad and pathetic. It's the only thing he excels at.

Y'know Mark's "Simplicity" has been on my "to read" list for a long time. Maybe I should get around to actually buying a copy.

I know that Lynn, and I am sorry that I posted what I just did, in a way. But a part of me wants very much to let him know that I was not FOUL to him, he was the one that started calling everyone names and losers and such, not me. I really hate to be blamed for something that I didn't do, as I already have enough things that I have done to stir pots and can have the blame placed squarely on my shoulders for many other things in my life that I thoroughly own up to, without having someone besmirch my character any more than I have done myself. I take full responsibility for my own mistakes, and try to make them better in the afterthought process or at least palatable to live with. But someone who places blame ought to really look at where that blame should be rightfully placed. Shouldn't they? And they shouldn't go around slinging crap at everyone or anyone without giving credence to the correct things that a person said. And then to lash off onto others, trying to drag them into the fray, over something that was an innocous statement at best. Truly juvenile from someone who wants to be taken seriously. So sad.

It is sort of like that character Omarosa on the Apprentice TV Show. She did lots of things and got caught in some of her own lies and in the telling of them, even. But she still to this day, refuses to take the heat for the actions she did. I take my heat, willingly, and own up to everything that I have done, I would expect the same from someone who is throwing it out. People in glass houses.....

if you decide to check it out, dennis - i'll order a few copies and sell you one. it's pretty expensive otherwise and i believe it'll be cheapest if you get it from me. i sell my copies for $20.
or - if you promise to mail it back, i'll mail you a copy and you could read it that way. no time limit on borrowing it, of course. i'll trust you're good on your word, especially since i've read your posts for more than a year and you've been consistant throughout.
anyway, thanx again for all the nice comments. what a wonderful world it would be if contact niceness rubbed off on certain rabid personalities. oh well.

Dennis - Simplicity is not for the squeamish. As Joyce stated in her review, Patrick is tortured horribly by the worst demons hell can offer. I could barely stand to read parts of it due to that realistic torture. BUT, it's what Mark did as writer - contrasting good and evil, protecting a core of decency in a man who had nothing to lose in becoming a vampire. It was like a social commentary disguised as horror, written by a man who knows how to write.

Mark Dirschel and Steven Shrewsbury transformed me into a willing reader of horror, a genre I have never preferred.

Well, isn't this just a nice sunday conversation.

I do have one thing to say about Herschel's drivel posted above...

CEW is so pissed with PA he started this website with the sole intention of knocking and derailing PA. Hasn't worked yet has it CEW?

The first sentence is, of course, complete nonsense. This forum was built to keep the people together that I had made acquaintance with on another forum that met an early demise. The point of the forum is so that people who do want to be published authors can get some of the information that was missing back when I was looking for it on the internet.

Regarding the second sentence... if you believe that, then what are YOU doing here, Herschel?

Oh, and I'm not pissed at PA at the moment. To say that I've never been would be a falsehood that you won't hear from me. But that is between me and them. At the moment, I have very little stake in anything regarding that company.

As for landing a major publisher, I have little doubt that it will happen for me, just as it will for many of the folks that frequent this forum - all of which has nothing whatsoever to do with Publish America, though I will say that I think everyone here who has had an experience with them has learned something valuable (and that will be something different for everyone, I believe).

And lastly... I just found some time. Have a nice life, Herschel.

CEW

PS - I find it really really funny, Herschel, that you became your own friend, posting as "Friend of Herschel" - as anyone can see be looking at the IP address on that post... Seems a bit pathetic to me.

Mark,

Now that's an offer I can't refuse, even though it was not made directly to me. I'm willing to spend $20 on a 400+pager, but that $30 tag is what makes me squeamish. If it's open, I already have your addy and will be willing to send you a check straight-away.

Folks, folks...any troll who won't use his real name isn't worth a bucket of warm spit, because Herschel's problem isn't braggadocio, or hubris, or even bad manners. It's called cowardice, and the man who's a coward faces a daily private torment that beggars the imagination. I know, I grew up in the South, and having seen how they're treated there, know there's no part of the country tougher on the gutless. So pity Herschel, or revile him, whatever floats your boat. But don't reply, tempting though it is. Because at the end of the day, the man who goes to bed a coward, takes tiny bit of of his own hell with him.

sure, laurie anne -
the offer is for anyone - thanx for making my day. $30 is too rich for my blood also - i've never spent that much for a book, not even for a brand new, hardcover Stephen King and that man is my god.
if you're gonna send a check, though i'll have to order books either today or tomorrow.
really, thanx for this. i hope you like the book.

Laurel, glad I could help in bringing you to the dark side at times :-) Even in the fantasy stuff I do, folks say I weave in alot of horror aspects. Shrugs. Dunno, sometimes it is just the reality of life.

I need to get Mark's book as well. Ashamed that I never have...

I have no shame, so I'll jump in here with my own offer (which has been going on for a while, but with all these new people......) as well.

My book, regularly $17, sells through me for $10 (+shipping, which is $1.50 in the US)...and for better or worse, I already have copies...

shameless promotion is never a bad thing, todd. you just might enrich someone's life.

no reason to feel ashamed, steve. we either read each other's stuff or we don't. no shame involved.
in the works:
1.) writing competition - deadline may 15. www.writersdigest.com - scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'contests'. it's a HUGE contest open to everyone and everything. i won't win cuz horror stuff never wins, but a letter of recognition would be nice - in a narcissistic sort of way.
2.) trying to secure an agent for a horror / thriller novel - Alone
3.) trying to secure an agent for sci-fi / horror novel - Progeny
4.) writing new horror / thriller novel - fear - and it's a doozy. heh heh.

how about yourself?

I have an epic fantasy novel under consideration as we speak...writing another one of those (and one about Elijah Blackthorn when the mood strikes me), plus polishing up tales for the BEDLAM UNLEASHED saga with Peter J Welmerink (writing the jousting tale SHIELD OF BLOOD this afternoon); doing final edits on STRONGER THAN DEATH Dack Shannon book with some great help from a friend; writing a few tales for a RPG antho for AZIERAN world by Chris Heath...aw crap, what else?
I dunno...trying not to get too distracted :-)

Laurel, I really need to get on those Blackthorn books. At times, I am led in different directions. Was gun ho on Blackthorn book for a few weeks, and then someone at work got me distracted with some fantasy material and another book took over my reigns.

Lynn, I'm glad you think so. It isn't typical fantasy you are used to reading, I wager. I hate labels. Historical, heroic high fantasy blah blah blah. There are chapters of that book that are straight out of a horror realm, ala the QUEEN OF HEAVEN chapter etc...but I digress...

I think it would be better if I had my own copy. I'd hate to borrow a book and then return it full of spaghetti stains. You can email me with your address and the full amount and I'll send a check.

All right. Hold on just a dadgum second! I started this promotional lovefest with my (ahem) eloquent review of Mark's book. Dontcha think the person who wrote the dang review might have a pretty darn good book herself???

Anyone who would like a copy of True Blue Forever at the special "Starving Author" discount price of $17 (that's $7.95 off the retail price, folks! A savings of almost 32%--Hey look, Todd! I did MATH!) may email me for immediate shipment. I'll even throw in FREE SHIPPING! (Media Mail, of course.)

Here's a sample of what the distinguished and much-celebrated author of Simplicity had to say about TBF:

"Let me start with an unadorned statement - I loved this book.

I carried True Blue Forever to work each day and read it on the train, forfeiting my nap on the ride home to continue reading. It brought out laughter, it forced me to wipe away at my mist-filled eyes, it stirred anger, frustration and an adolescent need to pump my fist with an “in your face” sense of triumph. True Blue Forever did, as all good books hope to do – it stirred me as a human being."

See, I told you it was pretty darn good! Get your own copy today!

When I said on this thread or another somewhere that PA has some top notch authors, I was not kidding. Yes, True Blue Forever was a heart grabber.

What's sauce for the gooses is sauce for the ganders too. I also have starving artist prices but will refrain from reviews. Todd can tell you. Modesty forbids. My PA published book can be had for nine bucks and my second non-PA published book is thirteen bucks.

I will now return you to our regularly scheduled programming.

And that's why the rest of us have to plug it for her... :-)
I haven't read her PA-published book, but the second (The Alley of Wishes) is a terrific book...

Taken from the August 2003 edition of "In This Corner":

"Well, I finished The Alley of Wishes earlier this month, and greatly enjoyed the story. I am not generally a romance reader, and was greatly impressed with this book. In fact, the book is (as the author told me) a love story rather than a romance novel, and I loved every moment of reading it.

I found this story truly captivating, in all aspects--characters, plot, dialogue. There really wasn’t any part of this book I didn't enjoy. The story kept me enthralled and entertained as I followed the lives of Beck and Cerise (and eventually, Rance and Colette), and their undying love for one another through many trials and tribulations. This book truly should be considered one of the finest examples of fine literature in the modern day. To the author, I say "Bravo!""

Can't hardly beat that for $13, I'd say... :-D

Could we start a thread somewhere in which everyone lists their books, the price, whether we can order directly from them or should go through PA or the publisher and any other relevant info? Could that be the only conversation on that thread, so that the info doesn't get so lost in the conversation?

There are quite a few books I would like to read. I would like to order directly from the author, but can order other ways if necessary. However, I would like to be able to find the info on them easily so I can order them as I get money.

Thanks.

Well, I've read Grass Dance and I thought it was fabulous (Laurel's book). I haven't read her others but can't imagine they would be any less wonderful. I hate to admit it, but I haven't read any books by the rest of you. But I have a good reason (notice I didn't say excuse) - I'm reading so much for my classes right now that I haven't had time to read much of anything for the pure pleasure of it. And since I'm starting PhD work this summer I will have even less free reading time, but some of your books sound great and I will do my best to get to them soon.

Mark,

I am BUBBLING with the idea of FINALLY getting to see your book. (And my husband is looking forward to not listening to me whine about it anymore. LOL.)

I will email you from home tonight to confirm that you haven't moved from the addy you put on that packet of salt-water drowning info for me. Then, I have added you to my list of payables for Friday's check. :-) (The drowning info I have not made use of yet, but I really DO appreciate the effort you put into getting it for me. Life has gotten in the way of writing a lot over the last 3 years, but I got a 'renewed inspiration' this weekend that is a very long, dramatic story.)

Yippee, skippee, dippee!
